DGL begins with Glycyrrhiza glabra - the liquorice root known in India as mulethi or Yashtimadhu - and substantially reduces its naturally occurring glycyrrhizin. The result is a modern liquorice-root preparation designed for regular use, made in Amsarveda’s own GMP-certified facility in Goa.

What is DGL?

Sometimes the most useful way to understand a botanical is not to ask what has been added to it, but what has been changed.

DGL stands for deglycyrrhizinated liquorice.

It begins with the same Glycyrrhiza glabra root that has been used in Indian botanical tradition for centuries as mulethi, or Yashtimadhu in Ayurveda, but the amount of one naturally occurring constituent - glycyrrhizin - is substantially reduced during processing.

This distinction matters because glycyrrhizin is responsible for much of liquorice’s characteristic sweetness, while repeated or substantial exposure to it is also behind many of the cautions associated with regular intake of whole liquorice.

DGL therefore does not represent a different herb, nor a “stronger” form of mulethi. It is simply the same botanical prepared in a different way for a different kind of use.

Why reduce glycyrrhizin?

Botanicals are rarely as simple as “good ingredient” or “bad ingredient”, because the amount, preparation, frequency of use and the individual taking them all matter.

Liquorice is a good example.

Glycyrrhizin is a natural part of the root, yet significant or prolonged exposure can influence the body’s regulation of sodium, potassium and fluid balance, which is why whole liquorice deserves thoughtful use rather than the assumption that anything natural can be taken without limits.

DGL takes a different approach by substantially reducing glycyrrhizin before the extract reaches the capsule. The idea is not to improve on nature. It is to understand the botanical well enough to prepare it differently when a different preparation makes sense
